Ingredients
- 1/2 cup creamy Peanut Butter
- 1/4 cup honey
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup old fashioned oats
- 1/3 cup ground flaxseed
- 1 Tablespoon chia seeds
- 1/4 cup mini chocolate chips
- 1/4 cup mini M&M's
- optional mix-ins: wheat germ, chopped nuts, shredded coconut, dried fruit...
Instructions
- Mix all ingredients together in a large bowl. Refrigerate for 15-30 minutes then roll into balls. Keep energy bites stored in an airtight container in the fridge or freezer.
Notes
This recipe can easily be adapted to your preference. M&M's can be omitted and substituted with your favorite nut or dried fruit etc. I usually add shredded coconut instead.
*The amount of honey has been changed from 1/3 cup to 1/4 cup due to feedback. If you add a lot of extra add-ins you may need a little more honey or peanut butter.
Yum, my kids would love these!! I love sneaking healthy stuff into treats. Perfect!
I love adding healthy ingredients to my kids snacks!
These look tasty, but for me energy bites have to be able to travel in the car or a backpack. I am wondering have you ever taken these hiking or on a road trip?
Thanks! I’ve been making these for years (minus the m&m’s and with the addition of coconut) and I’ve taken it everywhere! On road trips, just shopping trips or errands etc. They do travel well. I just make sure to keep them in the fridge beforehand (which I always do even if I just eat them at home) or if I’ll be taking them on a road trip I’ll freeze them first. I usually just put a few in a zip-lock but if there’s the possibility of it getting squished, use a small airtight container.
Do you happen to know how many calories are in them?
I’m sorry I don’t provide calorie information on my blog. I know there are a lot of resources on the internet that can help you calculate it though. Enjoy!
The entire recipe contains 2,476 calories. Made into 15 balls, they’d have 165 calories each. 12 slightly larger balls, 206 cal. each.
Thanks for sharing that info!
I need these today! I’ve had two really hard nights with my baby. I also showed my daughter these and she said, “mmmmm. YUMMY!!!!”
I’m sorry! I hope your nights get better. I know how that goes. My baby was up last night at 1 am. Luckily it was just once last night though. Enjoy these! 🙂
These look delicious! Thanks for the recipe.
Thank you! 🙂
Hi just wanted to know how long these will stay if u freeze them…? Me n my friends are going on a trip and I was wondering if I could make these…. Will these stay for a few days if properly freezed and wrapped before taking them for the trip?
I would say around 1-2 months in the freezer. So yes, it would definitely work out to freeze these for a few days. Or it can be in the fridge for around 1 1/2 weeks and they stay fresh. Have a fun trip!
An you sub the honey for equal amounts of agave? I just did but I’m wondering if the agave might be sweeter?
I can’t tell you for sure since I’ve never used agave. How did it turn out for you? I would imagine it’d be fine subbing in equal amounts but if it is super sweet you could add a little less (like a tablespoon less).
Yes you can sub an equal amount of Agave, and its actually less calories. 85 calories and 21 carbs per 2oz serving. I modified this recipe to have less calories and fat and increased the nutrients and protein and my son still loves them. I use Almond butter, agave, vanilla, oats, flax seeds, chai seeds, wheat germ and dark chocolate chips. I occasionally add hemp seeds or pumpkin seeds which are great for weight loss! Thanks for the inspiration!
That’s so great! Thanks for letting me and my readers know! 🙂
Any idea on calories per bite or grams of sugar per bite! I’m not so concerned but my mother is the crazy calorie counter!
I’m sorry but I don’t have that information. There are many resources out there though that can help you. Thanks for stopping by!
These sound so good! Just curious- any good substitutions for the honey?
I haven’t tried anything else but you could try maple syrup or agave.
I just made these and added brewers yeast to help with lactation. I now have a yummy lactation snack! Yay!
Great idea! So glad it worked out to be a great snack and a lactation snack! 🙂
Have you ever tried using something other than peanut butter like sunbutter?
I haven’t but I would imagine it would work just fine!
My 4 year old just helped me make these! He is a super picky eater but when I told him they were monster cookies with m&ms he was all about it. What I thought was hysterically funny was he ASKED to try each ingredient as they went in. That is super huge! I’m loving the flax and chia bc he doesn’t get enough iron in his food as it is and I am super excited to find something that will help him get some other than a vitamin. Thank you soooooo much for sharing this recipe!
Thanks for letting me know Tina! That is so awesome! 🙂 My kids are more willing to try my recipes when they help me out too. So glad you both enjoyed it!
So good!! Great afternoon snack. I can’t stop eating them.
I’m so happy you love it! 🙂
Hi Becky, these look delicious! Can I leave out the chia seeds and flax seeds? Would I add flour for consistently? Just wondering, because I want to make for a family reunion and I though that leaving those ingredients out would cut cost. Hate to sound cheap, but I already in over my head… Thanks
Hi Sharon! Leaving out the chia seeds is just fine. Instead of flax seeds I would either add 1/2 cup more oats or 1/3 cup oat flour. (Just oats blended up into a flour.) Let me know how it goes! Have fun at your reunion!
