Made with only five ingredients, this Five-Cup Fruit Salad is simple, quick and so delicious!
This fruit salad is called Five-Cup Fruit Salad because you use 1 cup of each ingredient! Pineapple chunks, mandarin oranges, sour cream, coconut flakes, and mini marshmallows. It’s easy to put together and so good! I was hesitant what I would think of this since I’ve never made fruit salad before using sour cream but it was amazing!
The sour cream adds creaminess and a slight tartness to this salad and I loved it! I used light sour cream to save on calories. If you want, you could use Greek Yogurt instead.
A few notes about Five-Cup Fruit Salad:
-You can change or add the type of fruit you use. Chopped apples or grapes would be really good.
-Sometimes I make this with fresh mandarin oranges instead of canned when they are in season.
-If you prefer, you can use Greek yogurt instead of sour cream.
This is such an easy and delicious fruit salad.
You will love it!

Thanks! Fruit salad is always a favorite of mine!
Do I buy sweetened coconut or unsweet??
You can use either depending on the sweetness level you’d like in this salad. I usually use sweetened coconut flakes in this recipe.
Yum! I’ve had something very similar to this, and it’s DELISH!
Thanks!
When I was a kid I would take the bowl of this and hide under the bed eating it
It is so yummy and I still would hide under the bed
haha That’s so great! π
This looks really good! I bet using Greek yogurt would help the tartness (though I like tartness) and increase the protein as well.
You could certainly do that!
My family does not care for sour cream or yogurt what else could maybe cool whip work or any other suggestion
I think cool whip will work great! π
My kids love fruit cups! I can’t wait to try this out on them!
Hope you all like it! π
I’ve never tried one with coconut flakes, sounds delicious!
I love the texture/flavor the coconut has!
I love how easy this recipe is to make! Thanks for sharing at The Weekend Retreat, Hope to see you back on Thursday.
Thank you for stopping by!
So you only drain the pineapple?
You drain the mandarin oranges and before you drain the pineapple you keep 1 tablespoon of the pineapple juice to use later.
Should the Greek yogurt be vanilla flavored?
That would work just fine. Honey Greek yogurt would taste good too!
I love how easy this was to prepare!
I put in a cup of walnuts and Cream use crushed pineapple
Iβve made this for years and I add green seedless grapes, cut in half or fourths depending on how large they are and chopped pecan pieces for some crunch Yummy
That sounds great! Thanks for sharing! π
If I make fruit salad on Friday, will it be good on Monday?
It would still be fine and taste good but liquid will pool at the bottom and the marshmallows will get soft. If you need to make it Friday I would suggest waiting to add the sour cream and marshmallows on Monday.
I was given this recipe over 30 years ago in Australia. I was told it was good served with a bar-b-q or as a desert. Anyone I served it to absolutely loved it π
That’s so neat! Thanks for sharing.
I will love to try this first
I saved 1.5tbs of the pineapple juice, and I used 1.5c of coconut flakes. And everything else the same. Hopefully it turns out good. π€π€
That sounds great! Thanks for letting me know! π
Cant wait to try this, for my husband and I, then church potluck. Perfect summer salad.
Enjoy!
Can I make this the day before serving? I have a luncheon and wanted to make tonight or should I wait and make in the morning?
You can make it tonight! Keep it in the fridge and just pull it out when you are ready to serve it!
We have always loved 5 cup salad. We have had it every year for the holidays ever since I can remember (and I’m almost 60) but we always used whipped cream instead of sour cream.
That sounds delicious too!
Has anyone ever tried to put chopped pecans or walnuts in the salad?
I’m sure that would be a great addition if you love nuts!
You can add a little sugar if the sour cream is not to your liking but salad is delish
Great tip!
Do you know how many this would serve? I am having 12 for dinner and want enough for everyone.
I would double it then. Serving size varies on how much each person would want but doubling should definitely be enough.
My mother discovered this salad in the late 60s-early 70s after we moved to a new community, The ladies there liked to get together and everyone brought a dish to share and this became hers. Though it is 5 -cup salad, she always made a double batch so she called it 10-cup salad. It was always a hit and she took an empty bowl home! For someone who was not much of a cook, she was always thrilled about it! Once another lady brought the fruit salad with walnuts, and that is good too. This is fast and easy to make and there are so many variations you can try until you find your favorite. I want to try some different ingredients suggested here. Thanks for posting this!
That is such a neat story. I love that this recipe has so much history. Thanks for sharing! π
I was given this recipe years ago by an American nursing colleague. In her family it was a tradition to have it with the Thanksgiving meal, and it is served as a salad rather than a dessert. They call it “One cup salad” because there’s one cup of each ingredient. Whatever you call it, it’s delicious. I like the idea of boosting the protein by using Greek yoghurt.
Thanks for sharing! Yes, Greek yogurt sounds delicious and such a great bonus with more protein.
