My husband recently started a new job at BYU (which he is loving!) and needed something to put up on the blank wall of his new office. We decided it’d be awesome and fun to make our own wall decor and this is what we came up with. We love how it turned out! We started out with this idea in our heads but couldn’t find much help online so we did our own thing. I love the rustic look. This same idea could work with any idea you’d like to have on the front. Here is our tutorial on how we made this.
First step, Home Depot. We bought five 8 foot 1″ x 4″ boards and had them cut them four feet long. We ended up with ten 4 foot long boards and we used 9 of those. Back home Derek sanded them. Then we stained them with a dark indoor wood stain.
We lined them up side-by-side staggered. We used metal plates with screw holds on the back of the boards to hold it all together. I’m sorry I didn’t get a final picture of the back. We had 2 on each side.
Derek made a big stencil of the logo using two poster boards taped together. He made a grid to help him get the right proportions.
Then he cut it out, tacked it on to secure it, and painted the logo on the board. Looking back, tacks weren’t the best idea although it worked out just fine. Next time we make something like this we are going to try using frog tape. First he painted the blue part of the oval, then the white Y and lastly the border. He did a couple coats of white.
Once it was dry it was ready for it’s debut!
To hang it on the wall he used 2 D-ring hooks. He is loving it! I’m jealous I don’t get to see it everyday!
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Go Cougars!
That turned out so cool! I’d love if you’d link up to The DIY’ers. http://homecomingmn.blogspot.com/2013/04/the-diyers-and-more-curtains.html
This is so impressive! Great work. You should sell these on etsy or something!
Looks great! We made a similar “Y” board a few months ago in our boys room, go BYU! Found you at tidy mom;)
This looks so great! My husband actually worked with yours and I just randomly stumbled onto your page when I saw this cool wood art idea.
Of course I’d have to use West Virginia University for mine (ask your husband – Doug said).
This would go perfect in his man cave! Love the idea!

I was looking for a Byu picture and this came up and I said to myself “hey, I know that wall hanging!” I’m lucky to get to see it every day as I work in the same place as your husband.! The wall hanging is wonderful and is just perfect on his office wall. We all think your husband is quite wonderful ad well!!
That is so fun Denise! You are luckier than me because I miss seeing this BYU wood decor. It’s so cool! 🙂
I want to make something like this for my son’s room. Do you know what color of blue you used and what brand? I want to get the color perfect!
That’s awesome! Our boys room is BYU themed and they love it! It’s been awhile since we made this so I am not sure. We are pretty sure the paint color was Navy Blue.
Thank you!!!! 🙂
Hi. What was your technic to actually hanging it up? It must be really heavy. So what exactly did you use so it wouldn’t fall and tear out the wall? We want to use this idea for my sons room. Great idea!
Since it weighs 10-15 lbs, you certainly want to be careful. However, it actually doesn’t need anything more than you likely already have in your toolbox. My husband has had to re-hang this three different times since we made it because he’s moved offices. He actually has BYU’s Physical Facilities come and hang it for him, so they know what they’re doing. But all they do is put two wall anchors for screws and then two screws into the wall anchors (you know, those plastic screw-like anchors that you drill a hole for, then insert, then screw the screw into the middle of it?). That’s it. I would recommend having a long screw (at least 1.5 inches). And of course, if you could get one of those screws into a stud in the wall, that’s much better! However, it works great and is quite sturdy with just the wall anchors. I bet your son will love this!
