Buttermilk Syrup

March 20, 2012 by becky 2 Comments

Buttermilk Syrup

I don’t like maple syrup very much and so when we had pancakes the other day I decided to make buttermilk syrup.  It’s super easy to make plus fun too. It’s fun to watch the color change to a caramel texture.  I love the taste of it. It goes great with pancakes, German pancakes, waffles etc. It’s honestly more like caramel than syrup but hey that’s just fine with me!

Yield: Yield: About 2 cups.

Buttermilk Syrup

Buttermilk Syrup

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk (or scant 3/4 milk + scant 1 Tbsp. vinegar or lemon juice, let sit for 5 minutes)
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 2 Tbsp. corn syrup
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. In a large sauce pan combine all ingredients except the vanilla extract; bring to a boil. Boil for 7 minutes. Remove from heat; stir in vanilla.

I’ve never heard of such a thing but it sounds delicious. And I love caramel! Pinning for later.
